The Currency Room
The Record
Every entry dated, every number sourced, rumor excluded. A reader in ten years should be able to rebuild this autumn from this room alone.
Mid-September 2026
The schools move first
The movement begins with the youngest people in it. Students at lycées — French high schools — begin striking and blockading their schools in protest at the underfunding of public education. The first grievance is specific and material: schools without enough teachers, resources, or repair.
The action is not a single day's walkout. It spreads from school to school and holds.
Late September – October 2026
The blockade becomes a movement
The school strikes widen into a general rising. In total, more than 1,020 high schools are struck or blockaded as the movement grows. Students at the grandes écoles join. Then the adults the students were said to be speaking for arrive in their own names: teachers, nurses, firefighters, and parents, alongside veterans of earlier movements, including the yellow vests.
The movement organizes itself in numbered Acts and consciously invokes May 1968. A giant banner reading GEN Z is flown from the column of the Bastille in Paris.
The Demands
The demands, as stated by the movement
Across the Acts, the demands carried by the unions and the street — the CGT among the backing unions — are consistent:
- Higher wages and higher pensions.
- Lower prices.
- Protection of public services.
- An end to police violence — named in the demands themselves, not added afterward.
This house records the demands as the movement stated them. Under the first spark of the schools, police violence is not a side issue. It is a core grievance, and the arrests below are the reason why.
The Arrests
More than 6,600 arrested
Through the autumn, more than 6,600 people are arrested, overwhelmingly young — students and minors among them in large number. The figure is the movement's open wound and the standing fact behind this label's pledge: a share of proceeds from THE SHOP is pledged to the legal defense of arrested students (10 percent).
The Cost
The cost, in the body
Police violence moves from allegation to injury. In Lens, a 15-year-old loses a hand to a police stun grenade. Two deaths are reported around October 17. Viral footage of police interventions circulates through the autumn and is credited in reporting with driving turnout upward rather than down — each new video brings more people into the street behind it.
Archivist's note
The two reported deaths are entered here as reported. Names, places, and confirmed circumstances for both are [UNVERIFIED] in this house's sources as of 1 November 2026 and will be entered in full only when reporting establishes them. The record does not hurry the dead.
17 October 2026
The great march
The autumn's largest day. More than 800,000 people march in Paris, with marches in 140 other cities across France, under CGT-backed demands. The number is the measure of what the schools began: a protest about school funding that the whole country, in the end, answered.
5 November 2026 — Announced
The national day
The unions have called a nationwide day of action for Thursday, 5 November 2026. At the time of writing — 1 November 2026 — the day has not yet happened. This entry stands in the chronicle in advance, so the record can be completed as the day unfolds: turnout, demands restated, arrests, and outcomes, added from sourced reporting, dated and numbered like everything else in this room.
Standing rules of this room
1. Every entry carries its date; when a date is approximate, the entry says so.
2. Every number carries its source. Competing figures are both recorded, not averaged.
3. Government offers and responses are entered in the government's own terms, beside the movement's.
4. The movement's slogans and banners are recorded verbatim, as carried — that material belongs to VOICES, cross-referenced here.
5. Nothing enters this room from social media alone. A claim needs reporting behind it, or it waits, marked [UNVERIFIED].
Source basis for the opening entries: press coverage of the movement gathered and read by this house on 1 November 2026. Figures are stated as reported; where reports vary, the entry says so rather than choosing a number for convenience.
